Chapter Five

As the horses reached the Bois de Boulogne, Odetta found herself overwhelmed by her memories of what had happened the night before.

For the moment she felt as if she was once again walking under the trees with the Earl beside her.

Then when they reached the cascade –

She forced herself to stop thinking and to say somewhat incoherently to Penelope,

“It is – such a – lovely day and the Bois de Boulogne is so – beautiful.”

Even as she spoke, she realised that Penelope was not listening and she thought that once one was in love it was impossible to think of anything but the person one loved.

They drew up outside the aquarium and, because Penelope was in such a hurry to jump out of the carriage, Odetta put a warning hand on her arm.

They walked in through the entrance and across a small vestibule, then found themselves in a wide corridor plunged in shadow with fish tanks on all sides.

Odetta in a quick glance saw a series of pictures lit by the light of a Blue Grotto, which gave them a very magical effect.

Then the next moment she heard Penelope give out a little cry as a man came from the shadows towards them.

It was Simon Johnson.

Odetta had only seen him dressed in his country clothes before and she thought now that he looked different and very much more presentable.

But there was no doubt that to Penelope the only thing that mattered was that he was there. Her hands were in his and her words were tumbling over themselves as she exclaimed,

“Simon! It is really you! I have wanted ‒ so much to see you again.”

“And I to see you,” he said in a voice that was very deep and sincere.

“But why? Why are you here?” Penelope asked.

As if Simon realised that they had forgotten everything but themselves, he disentangled his hand and, holding it out to Odetta, said,

“Thank you very much for coming with Penelope. I am sure that it was you who thought of the aquarium.”

Odetta smiled.

“It was,” she admitted, “and it appears to be a very convenient place to hide in.”

Simon glanced round.

“Let’s go to somewhere where there will be many fewer people,” he suggested. “I have something important to tell Penelope.”

Penelope slipped her hand into his and then they walked down the corridor, while Odetta looked curiously at the chambers that had been made in the thickness of the walls.

She had never seen an aquarium before and she was fascinated to observe that there was a bed of sand in the bottom of each fish pool, stones and fragments of rocks partially covered with plants, while seascapes had been painted to make each cavern very attractive.

She had longed to ask the Earl if he had been here, then was certain that he would not be interested, but her imagination was telling her that she was seeing the mountains and valleys of an unknown country or of what might even be a new planet.

They reached the end of the corridor where there was a wooden seat for visitors, which fortunately was empty.
